A career in marketing can take you in several different directions. Marketing is comprised of many facets and activities. Marketing can be defined as being the intermediary function between product development and sales. Marketing careers attract creative and driven individuals. Though most marketing jobs are specialized marketing typically draws on your ability to match perception of the market with achievable plans of actions.

Job Profile

Depending upon the chosen career path, people in marketing engage in a wide variety of job duties.

Negotiate contracts, advertising media or products to be advertised.
Organize market research surveys and analyze their findings.
Research and plan advertising campaigns
Decide which media to advertise in, such as radio, television, print, online and billboards
Negotiate contracts
Inspect creative elements and layouts
Develop pricing strategies for products to be marketed, keeping the client’s budget balanced with the firm’s needs
Meet with clients to present campaigns and offer advice and strategies
Oversee staff and ensure deadlines are met.

Skills required

Building relationships: Creating good working relationships with the people around you is critical to being able to deliver a job, as both sales and marketing roles relay heavily on other people to succeed.
Writing skills: If writing is one of your weaknesses overcome this by reading areas of interest. i.e. if you like cars start by reading wheels magazine.
Multitasking: On daily basics you can be required to jump in and out of variety roles, so ability to clear your mind and start the next task is essential.
Tertiary education: A tertiary qualification is great on your resume and demonstrates your ability to learn. It can also be the deciding factor in if you get the job or not.
Industry: Staying in touch with what is happening in your industry as markets are always changing. This demonstrates that you have a true interest within the area.
Communicating: An extremely important part of marketing and sales is being able to generate ideas and organize those ideas in a way that enables you to communicate them effectively to achieve the desired outcomes (generate revenue and/or raise awareness).
Data and figures: Both sales and marketing professionals rely heavy on analyzing data and figures; it’s this information that is used in creating new plans and objectives.
A broad understanding of people’s roles: Both sales and marketing rely heavily on others contributions to achieve the desired outcome of their plans and or objectives.
Thinking outside the box: To position your product/service in front of your competitors.
Lastly the most important attribute is Passion: Loving what you do is always the key to success.
