To become a graphic designer, you will need to have IT and drawing skills. You'll need to be able to find practical solutions to problems. You'll also need excellent communication skills. These trained professionals work alone or in teams, under the supervision of art directors and alongside copywriters, to generate interesting, unique images foe their client base. The most successful graphic designers pair their creative ability with technical knowledge and a professional level of communication.
Job Profile
As a graphic designer, your work would include:
- discussing the requirements of the project (the brief) with clients and colleagues
- providing costs for the project
- choosing the most suitable materials and style
- producing rough sketches or computer visuals to show the client
- using specialist computer software to prepare designs
- producing a final layout with exact specifications for typefaces, letter size and colours
- Working to budgets and deadlines.
- You may also produce 3D designs for packaging, exhibitions and displays.

- Most graphic designers work for companies specializing in advertising, marketing or corporate communications, or as part of internal (in-house) design teams of large organizations such as retailers.
- Other employers can include online and print publishing companies, voluntary organizations and education providers.
- You may need to change jobs often to build up your experience and add to your portfolio. In larger companies you may be able to progress to senior designer, creative director and management positions.
- Another option is to become self-employed (freelance), working alone or in partnership with others.
Earnings
Graphic designers saw mean annual earnings of $45,340 in 2007, the BLS reports. Most were employed either in specialized design services or newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishers. Advertising and related services are also major employers, along with printing and support related activities.
The federal government paid the highest wages, with annual mean earnings of &67,960. Graphic designers working for the motion picture and video industries also saw high earnings, at $62,070. Those working in New York and California saw some of the nation’s highest earnings for graphic designers, with earnings of $55,180 and $52,720 respectively.
