Career as Civil Engineering
As a civil engineer you would plan, design and manage a variety of construction projects. You could work on everything from bridges and tall buildings to transport links and sports stadia. If you are interested in designing and building things then this job could be ideal for you. To become a civil engineer you will need excellent math’s and IT skills. You'll also need to be able to explain design ideas clearly and be well organized. Before you start in this job you would normally need to complete a degree or postgraduate master's degree in civil engineering. There are many career paths within this field. Specialties include architectural, structural, transportation, traffic, water resources and geotechnical engineering. Civil engineers may work for state or local governments or in the private sector at consulting or construction firms. Some civil engineers hold supervisory or administrative positions, while others pursue careers in design, construction or teaching.
Job Profile
These branches sometimes overlap but your regular tasks could include:
- Planning requirements with the client and colleagues
- Analyzing survey, testing and mapping data using computer modeling software
- Creating blueprints using computer aided design (CAD)
- Judging whether projects are feasible by looking at costs, time and labor requirements
- Assessing the environmental impact and risks connected to projects
- Preparing bids for tenders, and reporting to clients, public agencies and planning organizations.
- Managing, directing and monitoring progress during each stage of a project
- Making sure that sites meet legal guidelines, and health and safety requirements.
Skills required
To become a civil engineer, you will need to have:
- Excellent math’s, science, and IT skills
- The ability to explain design ideas and plans clearly
- The ability to analyze large amounts of data, and assess solutions
- A confident decision-making ability
- Excellent communication skills
- Project management skills
- The ability to work within budgets and to deadlines
- Good teamwork skills
- Full knowledge of relevant legal regulations.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Would you like to make the world safer and cleaner? Civil engineers make sure people have safe places to live and work. They provide clean drinking water and find ways to reuse garbage.
Civil engineering has five specialties:
- Environmental engineers remove contaminants from water, reduce non-hazardous solid waste volumes, eliminate pollutants from the air and develop groundwater supplies. Example- dams, buildings, offshore platforms and pipelines
- Geotechnical engineers develop projects below ground and determine ways to support structures on and in the ground. These engineers perfect mixtures for pavements and other structures by developing methods to stabilize soil conditions. Example- –transportation – roads, railways, canals and airports
- Materials engineers develop concrete and pavement systems for construction and soil stabilization methods. Example- – water supply networks, drainage and flood barriers
- Structural engineers face the challenge of designing structures that can withstand gusting winds, extreme temperatures, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural forces. They design structures for bridges, buildings, airplanes, and more. Example- ports, harbours and sea defenses
- Transportation engineers determine ways to meet the increasing travel needs of people, goods, and materials on land, air, and water. Example-geotechnical – mining, earthworks and construction foundations.
Earnings
Graduate salaries are between £17,000 and £25,000 a year. Experienced engineers earn between £25,000 and £40,000 a year, and senior Chartered Engineers can earn between £50,000 and £80,000 a year.
