AMU Vice-Chancellor stands up for equal opportunities for women

The Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU ) has said that the university will not tolerate any discrimination against women. Taking a firm stand for women, Lt. Gen. (retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah said that AMU was committed to providing female students "liberty, fair and equal deal," adding fear was the key to control the harassment of women.

He was speaking at a one-day workshop on Sexual Harassment: Socio-Legal and Religious Perspective at the university's law faculty.

The objective of the workshop was to sensitise the university's students and staff to the welfare of the women students, the organisers said.

Faculty dean Iqbal Ali Khan contended that only punishing the accused cannot mitigate the agony and pain of the victim. He suggested the victim should be given compensation by decreeing the movable or immovable property of the accused.

AMU pro-vice-chancellor Brig. (Retd.) S. Ahmad Ali said that no religion approved the harassment of women. He said one needs to change the mindset to curb the harassment.

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), a public university, was established by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan as Madrasatul Uloom Musalmanan-e-Hind in 1875-78. The university was established with an aim to train Muslims for government service in India and prepare them for advanced training in British universities.

The university was renamed as Aligarh Muslim University in 1920 and has two fully functioning off-campus centers located in the cities of Malappuram and Murshidabad.
